Every day we are barraged with new online marketing advice. With emerging trends, new techniques, and new technologies it’s nearly impossible to do it all. Sometimes it’s important to step back, consider what you see, and sift the good from the bad. In that spirit, today we offer you a list of things to avoid in your online marketing strategy.
1. Never Identifying a Target Audience
Marketing, when it is done well, is like aiming and firing at a target. When it is done poorly it is like shooting in the dark, and hoping to hit something. If you fail to identify a target audience, you may as well be shooting in the dark. The results, while not always fruitless, will be poor.
2. Neglecting SEO
Far too many online businesses are guilty of this. Word of mouth and targeted advertisements are good, but if you want real growth in the current online business climate, you need SEO. You miss out on an entire segment of unfound business when you fail to show up in their searches.
3. Using Too Many Platforms
With platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, and the list goes on, it is tempting to spread yourself too thin. Some platforms are not conducive to certain businesses. It’s better to be expert on a few platforms than to perform poorly on many.
4. Buying Followers
Big numbers on your social media may look nice cosmetically, but if the followers are fake, or unresponsive, then they’re useless to you. Growing organically, while slower, actually represents the true impact and size of your business’ online presence. Don’t give in to this shortcut. In the end, it will only make you look amateur.
5. No Budget
Social media is cost-effective, but you should by no means try to get by on no budget. To properly, and effectively make use of any platform, you need to allocate money for management, advertising, content creation, and branding. Be frugal, but don’t be so cheap that you lose out on the benefits of social media.
